The Strap-OnsI was able to catch this Virginia band once when they were up here in New Jersey awhile back and thought they were pretty awful. When I received this for review a few weeks ago, I pretty much sighed and let out a sarcastic…"great!!" Now, after giving this a few spins, I realize I have no business hating on this band. Maybe I didn't give these cats a fair chance or I wasn't paying enough attention to them that night I saw them live, or maybe it was just an off night because this album isn't too shabby if you're into some solid late '70s era punk rock.
The first band that comes to mind is easily the Dead Boys. Now this is not original in anyway, but neither were a lot of those '70s punk bands. Most went to a punk show and went home and started punk bands with their mates and just copied the sound of their favorite bands. So The Strap-Ons are clearly not original, but they play good punk rock music that doesn't take itself too seriously with song titles such as "Park That Ass", "My Dad Smokes Crack", "Strap-On Sally" and "Buttraped By Life". This album is nothing I would go out of my way to purchase, but I also don't mind listening to it either. So if Mohawks, bullet belts and tight black jeans are your thing, then this may be up your alley.
Rating: 3/5
