The Casting Out
Go Crazy! Throw Fireworks!
Fail Safe Records

John Martin

Obviously most people are going to be drawn into this band strictly based on the fact that this is Nathan Gray's (formerly of Boy Sets Fire) new band. Those waltzing into this CD looking for a reincarnation of the legendary political hardcore group are in for a disappointment and pleasant surprise all at once. The similarities between the two bands are far and few. The Casting Out are not political, the songs center on individual trials and tribulations where self-reflection and perseverance are the dominant themes. The style of music isn't even in the same ballpark as hardcore; rather it is an amalgam of pop rock and punk that relies on its melodies to entrance the listener. When was the last time a real hardcore punk record relied on its catchiness?

Those coming to this album based on the singer's old group should still find something here to keep them hooked. Aside from the aforementioned catchiness of these songs, you still have Nathan's strong and amazing vocals that are utterly impressive whether they are screaming for BSF or singing for TCO. Speaking of singing…let us not forget, that he did a good deal of that with BSF as well. It wasn't all frantic shouts and screams that made them so affective. It was the vocal play between his gorgeous melodies and schizophrenic screams. And those melodies are the one similarity between the two bands music. The Casting Out still boasts one of the most affective voices in any sub genre of punk. This new group, however, doesn't need the screaming. They are a pop band that wants you to have fun with their songs not be angry at the current state of the world.

Synopsis: Regardless of what bands these guys may have been in before…they really put out one hell of a debut. I've been recommending this band to just about everyone for the past couple weeks since I got my hands on this CD. And the reason I can honestly say I have been pushing it on everyone is because no matter what style of music you are into…I can't see you not enjoying this album. It is fun and memorable and certainly makes you want to sing along. There aren't too many records like that these days!
