Superman Curl

When I first received this EP for review, I began a long thought process that invades my brain weeks after it first entered like an unwanted intruder. That thought process centers around an idea for an article dedicated to the worst band names in rock & roll history. As the names of Hootie & The Blowfish and Five Finger Death Punch danced around my head in regards to this idea for a writing assignment, this Minneapolis-based group seemed to fit right in with said atrocious moniker. But alas, my job here is to give my opinion on the music contained on this CD and not rant on for a paragraph about a horrible band name.

Superman Curl play an extremely infectious pop rock that pays respect to both the British garage rock of the '60s and '70s, as well as early punk bands like The Ramones, Buzzcocks or The Undertones. They have a definite knack for pop arrangements and probably own a few Replacements and Superchunk records on top of the aforementioned punk and garage albums. Superman Curl, however, don't bring anything new to the table and personally I already own most of the aforementioned band's albums, so I'm content in not looking for new bands with a similar sound. This group is the type that I would really enjoy playing at my local bar on a weekend, but wouldn't take the time to seek out or spend money on. That's just my own opinion though. This band do play well and write catchy songs, so if you like your rock music chock full of melodies and memorable choruses, this may be right up your alley.

Rating: 2.5/5
Songs Worthy of Replay: "Dressed To The Nines" & "Back Where You Belong"
Synopsis: Well played pop rock with old-school garage rock and punk influences. Potentially a great bar band with catchy, well written yet generic tunes. For fans of Buzzcocks, The Undertones, The Replacements, Husker Du, Superchunk & New York Dolls. I recommend you check out some recordings online before spending your cash though.
