Sea Creatures With Weapons
Demo 2007
CD-R

John Martin

After listening to this demo a dozen times or so, I can't seem to figure out what is funnier...the completely asinine band moniker or the songs themselves. I'll settle on the band's name being more humorous and give the group creativity points for naming the band members after, what else?...sea creatures with weapons!

The lyrics are 95% indecipherable, so it's hard t really tell how funny these songs may be unless you visit the band's myspace profile to read the lyrics since this is just a CD-R demo with no artwork or lyrics page. The songs are screeched, barked and sung in a skate thrash method. The vocals really are hit or miss. At times horribly brilliant but unfortunately more than not they come up as sloppy as an ebola-infected cooter.

The guitar is simplistic and at times jumbled compared to the rhythm section. The bass work though is confusing to me. Even though it sounds well played in vein of the Jersey Shorecore style bands, most of the lines sound eerily familiar. I don't want to say it's ripped off, but if it isn't then it certainly fits into a well worn formula. The drums are probably the highlight of this subpar demo. They are nothing spectacular yet consistent and effortless sounding. This demo, as humorous as it is, lacks any continuity with too many contrasting moments that often clash whether it's thrash, punk, melodic hardcore and/or crew-style hardcore. This makes me wonder if the band even cared about musical cohesion. Somehow I doubt it. Why let minor details get in the way of a good time?

Rating: 2/5
Songs Worthy of Replay: #1 (sorry, I don't know the name) & 'Gunwhale'
Synopsis: I'll give this new band credit for their sense of humor and creativity, but I think there's much room for improvement musically.
