Mad SinProbably one of the biggest psychobilly acts of all time, and of one the most revered bands in Germany, this four piece has churned out 5 full lengths (I could be wrong, might be more) and has played thousands of shows worldwide since their inception way back in 1987. This, their latest offering brings fourth 19 tracks (49:22) of rampaging pyschobilly that draws from a wide range of influences of rock, classic hardcore, punk rock, and whiskey that results in a sound all their own. Lyrically, these guys hold the fort down. Using everything from witty metaphors, clever wordplay, to brilliant duel meanings used in a majority of the songs. Topics range from being amped up on amphetamines, social commentary, staying underground, materialism, and various other off beat topics that make Mad Sin the band they are. Also, Lars Frederickson of Rancid makes an appearance on "Apes on Parade," as well as the intro and outro. Patricia from the Horrorpops also lays down some lines in the track, "Dead Moon."
From a production stand point, this thing sounds as good as any album in the psychobilly genre. The vocals sear over the instrumentation, the guitars have a good balance of treble and clean, the rhythm section has a real tight bouncy feel with great tone on both the drums and bass. In terms of the layout, this thing is a treat for the eyes. Great cover art that ties into the album title, and by looking at the cover it gives you a good idea of what they would sound like. Great use of colors throughout the entire layout, they really jump out at you. Inside the booklet, although the color isn't present, they more than make up for it with the legible lyrics, unique band member photos placed in the middle of the booklet with various drawings and images placed on each page. Good stuff.
Rating: 3/5
Songs worthy of replay: Dead Moon, Fuel for Brains, Plastic Monsters
Thesis: Although I'm not too huge on psychobilly, this is a record that's fun to listen to. This is something I could put on for a nice change of pace and actually enjoy.
