Born To Hate Video MagazineWhen I'm not writing or listening to music I love to check out other zines and shit, so when I came across the Born To Hate series I was hooked. You can tell these guys are doing their shit for the right reasons, they aren't featuring the "hot" bands. They picked the bands who they felt in their eyes "...are fighting to keep this scene alive".
Well, this shit features 15 bands playing 4 songs from their set, although the back cover tells you 16 but sadly because of a mix up at the pressing plant, Cheech had to get booted which sucks because they are right up there as one of my favorites. But there's plenty to feast your eyes on: 25 Ta Life (This band always had good lyrics but damn I can't stand Rick Ta Life's voice), Shattered Realm (who plays some new goodies and some old gems). Full Blown Chaos (Too much new shit, I would've liked to hear stuff from Prophet of Hostility), Comeback Kid (Had the biggest crowd and response, they had a good mix of new shit and old), Lose None (I wasn't aware of this band until this DVD, good shit), On Our Own (fucking awesome), Death Before Dishonor (Their set just reaffirmed why they are one of the most criminally underrated bands), Internal Affairs (Mad energy, I fucking love these guys), King of Clubz (even though their live sound was a little shotty they still killed it), On A Warpath (I couldn't stand these guys, they look and sound like a joke), Fight Like Hell (They sounded tight as hell and good energy, feeling it), Furious Styles (Pretty good, nothing to write home about. You should know how these guys sound by the name), Take This Hand (Pretty cliche, wasn't feeling these guys much), The Crime Scene (This DVD has prompted me to check these guys out, quality) and Wintch Mob (eh.).
The biggest problem with these types of DVD's is usually the sound quality or it's synced upped poorly. This shit is great because not only is the sound quality solid across the board but you don't have to worry about any of the sync up errors, it captures exactly how the band sounds live. If the band sounds like shit live then it'll sound even shittier on the DVD. I love it, keeping it raw and unadulterated.
This shit looks professional as a mother fucker and you just can't go wrong with an old school NHL logo layout. The front cover has Bill Guerin and some other cat tangled up in a good ole' donnybrook. All of the bands featured on the DVD are displayed on the front cover with the bands logo in white font, same on the back except black font. The back cover shows a bench clearing brawl with what appears to be the Hurricanes and the Blackhawks. They should've used the Flyers/Senators brawl with the goalies fighting though haha. Even the CD face layout looks immaculate making good use of a almost translucent white with the BTH logo. The DVD menu looked real good, it featured another fight scene picture with all the bands displayed in vertical fashion. You can select the band or watch all of them straight through. It was a nice touch to have the band logo introduce the band before they started playing. Quality shit.
Rating: 5/5
Sections Worthy of Replay: Shattered Realm, Death Before Dishonor, On Our Own and Fight Like Hell
Thesis: This is for anyone that has been missing the shit out of the Guerilla Warfare Video Fanzine series. Even minus the interviews and extra information that GWVF featured, this DVD makes up for it with sheer bulk of content and quality bands all displayed in a much slicker fashion. Check them out on their Myspace and pick one of these things up.
