Blacklisted- Shawn Foley

So what's up dude how's it going?

Its going great, i'm in chicago right now, just played one of the most bangin shows in awhile, on tour w/ the warriors and embrace the end.

How did you hook up with Blacklisted, considered by many (myself included) the best hardcore band going right now?

Well thank you for that kind comment/opinion, well i was previously playing for Punishment and around Dec 2004 Blacklisted wanted to go full time and needed a drummer who would be down with touring and was able to play the songs so Joe hardcore basically hooked it up i studied the songs alot and then went into practice and well the rest is obvious history!

Did you play in any previous bands?

Like i said before i played in Punishment for a little while, and before that i played in Decomposed(started that band with chris and ian)

As a drummer in a straight up hardcore band, do you feel restrained with what can you do?

No not at all, were all pretty much musicians as well as hardcore kids, so if what i'm doing fits it will stay as long as it's not like blast beats haha, but the dudes in my band know my style and know that i love to get wild when i'm playing and i know as well what will sound good or what would even be too over the top and not fitting of that perticular song or part. I dont think people in hardcore bands should "dumb down" their playing in anyway!

From what I remember, you and you're brother Pat are both straight edge. What got you into the straight edge movement?

Well for me it was a personal choice due to the things i was seeing around me in the neighborhoods as well as what i had seen in my family when i was a kid and i never wanted my dad to feel the way he felt when his brother died, so i made a promise to myself to never get into that kind of lifestyle(drugs, alcohol addiction, etc), plus when i really got into Earth Crisis it definitly solidified me as a straight edge individual and as far as my brother goes i'd like to think that i was leading by example and the shoe fit for him as well so we wore it, and continue to right now!

How much has your life changed since you've joined Blacklisted, a band that tours its ass off, year round?

My life has changed completely, i'm gone all the time, trying to catch me in philly is like the coyote trying to catch the roadrunner, i never really see my family that much anymore and hanging out with people is almost impossible, We tour all the time and the song "Tourist" on the beat goes on wasn't written for no reason, but my family knows what i'm doing i keep in touch with phone calls so no one gets mad haha (that i know of?)

Do you still have a 9 to 5 to pay the bills?

No! i could'nt have a job right now, there is really no time between tours to get into a steady routine of work! I actually hate work and bosses and the whole 9 to 5 rat race, it fuckin sucks man!

What's the best and worst thing that has happend to you while touring?

Best thing= meeting all the friends i have made over the last year or so, and just seeing people in random cities going crazy for my band. Worst thing= 3 car accidents in one week, the second of which we hit black ice in vermont and did 360's in the road and then eventually went down in the ditch off the side of the road, somehow no one got hurt and although the trailer flipped none of the gear got fucked up at all, it was a very scary experience for us i still hate driving in snow to this day!

What's the summer plans for Blacklisted? Any plans on any new releases or anything in the works?

Right now our summer plans include touring and shows, were either gonna do one tour that i cant talk about or another tour that we will book ourselves, we'll see what happens, as far as new releases go: were gonna begin writing new material soon but have no plans or dates for recording or a date that it would be out, its too early to tell or figure that out.

Being from Philadelphia and actually getting out and seeing the country and the world, has that changed your perspective on the city you were raised in for better or for worse?

Well thats a very good question and honestly i have figured out that everywhere you go people in their respective cities are very bored with it and wanna get out! people are all the same we just say things different than the next person and act a certain way that were used to! I never changed my perspective on philly just appreciated where i was from more and i'll never take anything for granted cause i know people at home never got out, never strived for more than their block or corner which is fine and all but that never was me!

Be honest, how fat is Philly compared to the rest of the US? You know how we love our cheesesteaks and wooder ice. And soft pretzels too yo, can't forgot the about the soft pretzels.

No other city can compare when it comes to that shit man we got wawa, cheesesteaks, pretzels, santuccis, they cant fuck with us man haha!

How would you say that your first show with Blacklisted went?

It went well i was kinda nervous it was in Harrisburg with death before dishonor but i would say i did good, i was more nervous the next day cause that show was in philly at the church and the place was packed but all my friends said it was awesome so that made me feel alot better.

Where do you see yourself 10 years down the line?

Damn! well i would say hahah hopefully still playing music, hopefully having a girlfriend by then haha and maybe touring would still be in the picture, dog i aint gonna lie if i could be like the rolling stones i would in a heartbeat! haha

Top five releases of the past year?

Smoke or Fire= Above this city The Loved..Keep your heart LP and the self titled ep Ramallah= Kill a celebrity Foo Fighters= In your honor Kanye West= Late registration
